Nigerian businessman and social media personality, Blord, has sparked reactions online after speaking about the high cost of living and perceived pressure associated with living in Lagos.
Blord argued that earning ₦200,000 in Asaba could be more financially worthwhile than receiving the same salary in Lagos because of the difference in living expenses.
Speaking about the lifestyle associated with some of Lagos’ affluent neighbourhoods, he claimed that some residents spend huge amounts on accommodation in areas such as Banana Island because they believe being there provides better social and business connections.
He cited an example of a friend who, according to him, pays about ₦30 million in annual rent in Banana Island because of the perceived networking opportunities and proximity to influential personalities.
Blord said the pressure to maintain an expensive lifestyle in Lagos can become overwhelming, particularly for people who do not have sufficient income or business opportunities to sustain it.
He therefore advised some Nigerians to consider relocating from Lagos to their hometowns or other cities where their income could provide a better standard of living.
“Lagos pressure is real, 200k salary in Asaba is better than 200k salary in Lagos,” he said.
He added that people should not remain in expensive Lagos neighbourhoods simply for appearances or proximity to celebrities and wealthy individuals without having a sustainable financial plan.
