Political economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, has said his support for Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election is tied to the former Anambra State governor remaining focused on pursuing the presidency.
Utomi, in a post on his official X account on Thursday, said he would withdraw his backing if Obi accepts a vice-presidential ticket under another presidential candidate.
According to him, his position is based on the type of leadership he believes Nigeria needs rather than personal considerations.
Utomi also renewed his call for a review of the age of politicians seeking executive office in Nigeria, proposing that presidential and governorship candidates should not be older than 70.
He argued that the presidency should be focused on addressing the country’s future challenges rather than serving as a retirement destination for older politicians.
“I believe there should be a serious national conversation about limiting presidential and gubernatorial candidates to those aged 70 or below,” he said.
The political economist maintained that Nigeria requires leadership that looks beyond immediate political succession and focuses on the country’s long-term development.
Utomi said he had consistently made his position public and urged Nigerians to assess the principles behind his views as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
