A 25-year-old man, identified as Bakeru Iwal, has died after part of an old building collapsed during demolition at Otolo-Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Anambra State Police Command said the incident occurred while workers were demolishing the structure, with a section suddenly collapsing and trapping Iwal.
Police operatives from the Otolo Divisional Headquarters responded to the scene after receiving the report, cordoned off the area and commenced preliminary investigations.
According to the police, the scene was documented and the deceased was evacuated to a mortuary, where his remains were deposited pending an autopsy and other necessary examinations.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, directed that the circumstances surrounding the death be thoroughly investigated and that appropriate action be taken if anyone is found responsible.
The Command urged members of the public to remain calm as the investigation continues, adding that further updates would be provided when necessary.
