Nigeria’s House of Representatives has summoned Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele and Accountant-General of the Federation Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi over ₦75 billion reportedly borrowed from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
The two officials are expected to appear before the House Public Accounts Committee on Thursday, October 22, to explain how and when the funds will be repaid.
The decision followed a committee hearing in Abuja, where lawmakers questioned the withdrawal of funds belonging to government agencies to meet other financial obligations without clear repayment arrangements.
Committee Deputy Chairman Jeremiah Umaru said public funds allocated to one agency should not be diverted for other purposes without clear terms and conditions.
He stressed that lawmakers wanted a specific repayment timeline rather than explanations alone, noting that government-to-government borrowing should still carry clear repayment commitments.
The hearing places renewed scrutiny on the management of public funds earmarked for basic education, with lawmakers seeking assurances that the ₦75 billion will be returned.
