Why Defend Those Making You Suffer?, Pat Utomi Questions APC Supporters

Pat Utomi

Professor of Political Economy Pat Utomi has criticised Nigerians who defend the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing that some citizens continue to support a government whose policies they believe have contributed to their hardship. In a Facebook post on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Utomi questioned why political loyalty remains strong among people facing economic difficulties.

Utomi challenged Nigerians to reflect on the impact of government policies on their daily lives, asking why citizens experiencing hardship would defend the leaders they hold responsible. He argued that tribal, religious and political affiliations should not prevent people from questioning those in power or demanding accountability.

The political economist also cited Singapore’s development under former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, arguing that the country’s transformation showed how leadership and good governance could shape national progress. He recalled that Lee had visited Nigeria in the 1960s and reportedly identified corruption and tribalism as obstacles to the country’s development.

Utomi said his criticism was motivated by concern for future generations rather than personal political ambitions. He warned that Nigerians could leave their children and grandchildren with a damaged future if they continued to prioritise party, ethnic or religious loyalty over accountability and good governance.
