Following the incident, some residents gathered at the scene and began picking up the rice despite the unhygienic conditions in which it had spilled.
A video capturing the incident has sparked reactions, with a Nigerian lady expressing her response to the sight of residents collecting the rice from the contaminated water.
The incident has also drawn attention to the economic realities that may compel some people to salvage food items under questionable sanitary conditions.
However, consuming rice that has come into contact with dirty or contaminated water could pose serious health risks, as washing or cooking may not always eliminate every potential contaminant.
