The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has increased its petrol pump price to ₦1,405 per litre, despite controversy surrounding the federal government’s proposed fuel discount.
The latest adjustment represents a ₦35 increase from the previous price of ₦1,370 per litre.
Reports on Friday showed that the new price had taken effect at NNPC filling stations.
Several pump attendants, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the company announced the increase on Thursday before implementing it on Friday.
NNPC has yet to explain the reason for the adjustment.
The increase comes amid questions over the proposed petrol discount announced by the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele.
On Thursday, Oyedele announced a proposed fixed petrol gantry price of ₦1,375 per litre ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential election.
The latest pump price adjustment puts NNPC’s retail price ₦30 above the proposed gantry price, although the two prices apply at different stages of fuel distribution.
