The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, have pledged to prioritise security, education and economic recovery if elected in the 2027 general elections.

The duo made the commitment on Thursday during a town hall meeting in Enugu, where they engaged supporters and political stakeholders on Nigeria’s challenges and their plans for national development.

Obi assured Nigerians that he would work closely with Kwankwaso to address the country’s pressing challenges, particularly insecurity, which he described as a major threat to lives, property and economic activities.

The former Anambra State governor criticised the current administration over its handling of insecurity, insisting that protecting the lives and property of citizens remained the primary responsibility of government.

He maintained that his administration would take decisive steps to restore peace and ensure that Nigerians could live and carry out their businesses without fear.

On education, Obi promised to declare a state of emergency in the sector if elected, stressing the need to address the growing number of out-of-school children and guarantee access to quality education for Nigerian children.

He also urged Nigerians not to be carried away by political propaganda and campaign promises, challenging presidential contenders to openly discuss their plans for addressing the country’s problems.

Speaking at the gathering, Kwankwaso warned Nigerians against allowing ethnic and regional sentiments to influence their political decisions.

He noted that Nigerians were battling insecurity, unemployment, poverty and hunger, stressing that national unity, hard work, perseverance and collective determination were necessary to build a better country.

The former Kano State governor also urged voters to participate actively in the 2027 elections, insisting that citizens must not only cast their votes but also protect them and follow the electoral process until the results are announced.

Meanwhile, Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central in the National Assembly, described the Obi-Kwankwaso combination as the best presidential ticket for Nigeria.

Umeh expressed optimism that the South-East would overwhelmingly support Obi in the 2027 presidential election, urging residents of the region to remain committed to their political choice despite alleged attempts to discourage them.

He also commended Kwankwaso for his efforts to expand the party’s political support in Northern Nigeria, expressing confidence that the NDC ticket could attract nationwide backing.

The senator called on the South-East to unite behind Obi’s presidential ambition, describing the 2027 election as an opportunity for the region to make a significant political statement.
