The Federal Government has announced plans to ban heavy-duty vehicles from using the First Niger Bridge as part of measures to protect the bridge and ensure its long-term safety.
The Anambra State Federal Controller of Works, Timothy Emenike, disclosed that the government is considering placing barriers at both ends of the bridge to prevent heavy-duty trucks from accessing it.
The proposed move is aimed at easing persistent gridlock on the First Niger Bridge, which connects Onitsha, Anambra State, to Asaba, Delta State, by diverting heavy-duty vehicles to the Second Niger Bridge.
According to Emenike, the decision is being considered following repeated traffic congestion caused by broken-down trucks and other vehicles obstructing movement on the bridge.
He also urged motorists, particularly truck drivers, to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before using the bridge and to move faulty vehicles away from the road to avoid obstructing other road users.
The First Niger Bridge was reopened on October 15, 2026, following rehabilitation works after structural vandalism was discovered.
