President Bola Tinubu has expressed confidence in securing re-election in 2027, declaring that his overnight stay in Akwa Ibom State would be a “second-term presidential sleep” as political activities ahead of the general election gather momentum.
Tinubu made the declaration on Friday while addressing supporters at a reception and rally organised in his honour at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the state capital.
The President thanked the people of Akwa Ibom for their support and urged eligible voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general election, describing the cards as their most important instrument for determining the country’s political future.
“Thank you, Akwa Ibom. I love you with my heart. I will sleep in Akwa Ibom tonight. It’s going to be a second-term presidential sleep. I will dream of victory too,” Tinubu said.
He urged his supporters to mobilise eligible voters and ensure they participate in the forthcoming election.
“I will depend on you to go out and vote. The weapon you have is the PVC. If you have not collected it, please go ahead and collect your PVC. I am begging you, for the sake of your future,” he added.
Tinubu also reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the living conditions of Nigerians through infrastructure development, education, skills acquisition and employment generation.
According to him, his government remains committed to delivering on its promises and creating more economic opportunities for citizens.
“I promised you a better future, I promised you development, I promised you education. I promised you skill development, I promised you jobs. We are going to plant a lot of economic trees,” the President stated.
His declaration comes amid criticism from Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), who recently took a swipe at Tinubu over his travels across the country.
Obi had suggested that the President had not spent the night in any state outside Abuja and Lagos, a remark widely interpreted as questioning his physical presence and engagements across other parts of the country.
Tinubu’s announcement that he would spend the night in Akwa Ibom comes against the backdrop of the exchange between the two political figures, as political activities and early positioning ahead of the 2027 general election continue to intensify.
The President’s visit also featured the inauguration of projects executed by the Akwa Ibom State Government and political engagements with leaders and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
