Adenike Okebu and the Force of Excellence: Celebrating an Amazon

Adenike Okebu

There are women who succeed from the prism of success, and there are women who redefine what success truly means. They do not chase applause; they earn respect based on their work. They do not merely occupy positions of influence; they transform them into platforms for service, innovation, and enduring progress. Such women are, indeed, rare. They are the Amazons of every generation; not necessarily armed with swords, but with uncommon intellect, uncompromising integrity, disciplined excellence, and the courage to challenge the old order. Hon. Adenike Okebu is unmistakably in that category.

As she celebrates another year today, we honour not only the passage of time, but the remarkable journey of a woman whose brilliance has illuminated boardrooms, strengthened institutions, inspired confidence across continents, and helped shape one of Nigeria’s most compelling stories of economic transformation. A story of a state on every lip for positive reasons.

As a cerebral scholar and accomplished accountant of international repute; let me unapologetically state again at the risk of repetition – a global solution-provider, Adenike has distinguished herself as a certified fraud examiner, forensic accountant, financial strategist, governance expert, and trusted adviser whose professional footprints span global, regional, national, and sub-national institutions. Her career tells the story of a woman who has consistently chosen excellence over convenience, service over self-interest, and merit over favouristism.

Her remarkable journey through some of the world’s most respected institutions—including EY Nigeria, Deloitte, BUA Group, Platform Capital, and Pinnacle Oil and Gas—equipped her with an exceptional blend of Big Four audit discipline, corporate financial governance, investment expertise, and public sector reform experience. She has advised governments, corporations, development institutions, startups, and investment firms on finance, governance, technology, innovation, and sustainable growth, while serving on the boards of several organisations with distinction.

Mind you, she has also mentored thousands of young professionals, entrepreneurs, and empowered them to create opportunities, provide solutions and earn from their services.

Nike’s or “Iya wa”(remember Mr. Macaroni; Yes, Debo? Say no more), as I fondly tease her, professional credentials equally reflect a lifelong pursuit of excellence. As a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Chartered Management Consultant (ChMC), Certified Forensic Accountant (CCrFA), Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (ACTI), and Member of the Institute of Directors (M.IOD), Adenike represents the highest ideals of professionalism and ethical leadership.

Yet, perhaps her most profound contribution today is unfolding in public service.

As Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Enugu State, she has become one of the key minds contributing to the remarkable economic transformation that has repositioned Enugu as one of Nigeria’s most strategically managed states. Working alongside other members of the Governor’s delivery team, she has helped champion reforms anchored on fiscal discipline, transparency, technology, accountability, and efficient resource management.

The results have been remarkable. A state once widely perceived as financially constrained has steadily emerged as a reference point for innovation in public finance and economic management. Through deliberate policies that prioritise production over consumption, blocked revenue leakages, expanded non-tax revenue sources, modernised revenue assurance systems, and displaced entrenched corruption with technology-driven accountability, Enugu has become a destination where governments from other states now come to understudy transformative governance.

Serving as the administration’s revenue strategist, Adenike has played an instrumental role in designing and implementing innovative revenue assurance mechanisms that reportedly drove an extraordinary growth in the state’s internally generated revenue within a relatively short period. More importantly, these reforms have demonstrated that governments can substantially improve public revenue without imposing unnecessary tax burdens on citizens. It is a compelling lesson that innovation, efficiency, and integrity often produce better outcomes than excessive taxation.

Economic transformation is ultimately measured by lives changed. Across Enugu State, abandoned industries are gradually returning to life, new investments are emerging, opportunities are expanding, and thousands of young people are finding meaningful livelihoods. Behind many of these outcomes are dedicated professionals who work quietly behind the scenes, preferring results to recognition. Nike is indeed one of them.

Predictably, reforms that close loopholes and end the culture of easy money seldom go unchallenged. Those who benefited from inefficiency or corruption may resist change, as some of them are presently doing. Corruption will fight back under repackaged guises but will certainly end in defeat. History, however, consistently reminds us that every genuine reform attracts opposition from those who profit from the old order. The true measure of leadership is not the absence of resistance but the courage to remain steadfast in the pursuit of the public good.

Today, therefore, we celebrate not merely another birthday, but a life devoted to excellence, discipline, innovation, and responsible stewardship. We celebrate a woman whose brilliance continues to illuminate boardrooms, government institutions, and the wider financial ecosystem. We celebrate a professional whose integrity has become one of her greatest credentials.

May God continue to grant you sound health, renewed strength, greater wisdom, and abundant grace as you continue to deploy your extraordinary gifts in service to humanity. May your years ahead be even more impactful than those behind you, and may your legacy continue to inspire generations of professionals who believe that excellence, integrity, and innovation remain the surest pathways to lasting national development.

Congratulations, and many happy returns, Mrs Adenike Okebu.
