Aguleri-Umuoba Anam Crisis: Anambra Govt, Police Intensify Security Measures to Restore Calm

The Anambra State Government and security agencies have intensified efforts to restore calm and prevent further escalation following the crisis between Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, on Friday, October 2, led a delegation comprising the state Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, senior government officials, heads of security agencies and other stakeholders on an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas.

The visit was aimed at obtaining a firsthand assessment of the security situation, evaluating the impact of the crisis and strengthening measures to protect lives and property in both communities.

During the assessment, the delegation confirmed the fatal injury suffered by a victim and inspected areas affected by the reported destruction of property. Officials also reviewed the impact of the crisis on residents and assessed the security challenges confronting the communities.

The Commissioner of Police said the Police Command remained committed to maintaining law and order and protecting residents and their property, urging people in both communities to remain calm and avoid actions capable of worsening the situation.

CP Nnanna Oji Ama also appealed to residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could support ongoing security operations and efforts to restore peace.

The Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, similarly called on traditional rulers, community leaders, town unions, youth groups and other stakeholders to support government and security agencies in finding a lasting solution to the crisis.

Ibezim stressed that maintaining peace and security required the collective responsibility of the government, security agencies and residents.

The state government and security agencies said measures were being put in place to stabilise the affected areas and prevent further breaches of peace.

Authorities also indicated that efforts were continuing to address the underlying issues through dialogue and other lawful channels.

Residents of Aguleri and Umuoba Anam were urged to remain peaceful and law-abiding while security agencies continue to monitor the situation and work towards restoring normalcy.
