The Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has promised to reopen Nigeria’s land borders with neighbouring countries if elected president.
Atiku said the closure of the borders had severely affected economic activities in northern states bordering Cameroon, Chad, Niger Republic and Benin Republic.
Speaking on the policy, the former Vice-President said many young Nigerians in the affected communities depended on legitimate cross-border trade for their livelihoods.
“The Northern states bordering Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Benin Republic have suffered greatly from the closure of these borders. Many young people engaged in legitimate cross-border trade. That is why I said I will reopen the borders,” Atiku said.
He argued that reopening the borders would help revive legitimate economic activities, create opportunities for young people and improve the livelihoods of communities that depend on cross-border commerce.
