A trader at the Electrical Market in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has raised concerns over the persistent flooding around the market, blaming the situation partly on heavily blocked gutters and poor drainage maintenance.
In a video, the drainage channels around the market are seen filled with dirt and refuse, leaving little or no room for rainwater to flow freely.
The trader said the blocked drains contribute to flooding during heavy rainfall, forcing water onto the road and potentially worsening damage to already vulnerable road surfaces.
He also criticised the management of the market, alleging poor organisation and inadequate leadership in maintaining the environment and ensuring that drainage channels are regularly cleared.
The concern comes amid renewed efforts by authorities to address flooding and indiscriminate waste disposal in Obosi and surrounding communities.
In August, the Idemili North Local Government Area warned residents against dumping refuse in gutters and waterways and announced tougher enforcement measures following flooding incidents in Obosi, Ogidi and neighbouring communities.
The Anambra State Government has also repeatedly identified blocked waterways, indiscriminate refuse dumping and poorly maintained drainage channels as factors contributing to flooding and erosion across the state. Markets and other organisations have been directed to regularly desilt their drainage systems and properly evacuate waste removed from the channels.
With the Electrical Market axis already facing significant road and environmental challenges, traders are now calling attention to the state of the drainage system and the need for regular maintenance to help reduce the impact of flooding in the area.
