Suspected armed herdsmen have launched a deadly attack on Agwa and surrounding communities in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, leaving several people dead and many others injured. Among the victims is a pregnant woman, Joy Osita Achugwo, who was reportedly shot during the attack and is currently battling for survival in a hospital, Akelicious has learnt.
The brutal assault has triggered widespread outrage and condemnation across the region, with urgent calls for government intervention to safeguard innocent lives.
The Chairman of Oguta LGA, Ifeanyi Nnani, visited the survivors on Tuesday and condemned the attacks in the strongest possible terms.
“The gruesome killings of innocent people, attacked in their own homes and farms, is a clear indication of the deepening insecurity in our state,” Nnani said.
He expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, assuring them that the local government leadership is committed to restoring peace and order in Agwa Clan.
“We will do everything possible to ensure that those responsible for these attacks are brought to justice,” he added.
The attack in Agwa occurred less than 48 hours after a similar incident in Enugu State, where suspected Fulani herdsmen reportedly killed four local farmers in Mgbuji Eha-Amufu Autonomous Community. The two incidents have heightened concerns over growing insecurity in Nigeria’s southeastern region.
In response, the Federal Commissioner representing Imo State in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Kyrian Uchegbu, advised residents to establish strong vigilante groups to bolster local security.
“We need to work together to ensure our communities are safe and secure,” Uchegbu said.
The incident has left many residents in shock. One community member, speaking anonymously, described the violence as an act of terrorism and called on the federal government to intervene urgently.
“This is a clear case of terrorism. We need the government to take decisive action to protect us from these attacks,” the resident said.
A pointer that the state and federal government have failed woefully since they can not protect the lives and properties of those they were elected to take care of. You can only hear them to be the first to condemn the actions of their pay masters, tge fulanis.
