Tanzania’s Vice President, Emmanuel Nchimbi, has resigned from office, with President Samia Suluhu Hassan accepting his resignation, according to a government spokesperson.
Nchimbi is expected to officially leave the position on September 4, 2026, after serving as Vice President since November 2025.
The government said the process of selecting and appointing a new Vice President will begin in line with the constitutional provisions of Tanzania.
Nchimbi’s resignation comes after a period in which he served as the country’s second-highest political office holder under President Hassan’s administration.
His departure will now lead to the appointment of another person to take over the role.
Before becoming Vice President, Nchimbi held a senior position within Tanzania’s ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party.
He previously served as the party’s Secretary-General, giving him a prominent role in the country’s political structure.
The government spokesperson announced Nchimbi’s planned departure in a statement shared on social media, while confirming that constitutional steps would be followed to fill the vacant position.
Nchimbi’s exit on September 4 will bring his tenure as Vice President to an end less than a year after he assumed office in November 2025.
The next Vice President will be appointed through the procedure provided by Tanzania’s constitution.
