South African police have rescued a 25-year-old e-hailing driver who was allegedly kidnapped, sexually assaulted and held for ransom by five suspects in Cape Town.
The victim reportedly became acquainted with one of the female suspects through his e-hailing business after transporting her the previous week. The pair exchanged contact details and remained in communication before arranging to meet.
However, police said the planned meeting turned into an alleged kidnapping, with the woman and four accomplices reportedly holding the driver captive.
The suspects allegedly contacted the victim’s brother and demanded R4,000 in exchange for his release.
Police were able to trace the victim after using a tracker installed in his vehicle. The tracking information led officers to Southampton Road in Heathfield, where the driver was found and rescued.
Two women, aged 23 and 34, and three men aged 16, 42 and 48, were arrested in connection with the incident.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 14, as police continue their investigation into the alleged kidnapping, sexual assault and ransom demand.
