Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence over the circumstances surrounding his latest Portugal national team camp, revealing that a disagreement with the new head coach led to what he described as a breach of trust.
In a lengthy statement, the Portugal captain said he had initially welcomed the appointment of the current coach and believed he was the right person to lead the national team.
Ronaldo revealed that he met with the coach before the international camp, where the manager told him that he was central to his plans and presented a schedule for his involvement. According to Ronaldo, the plan was for him to play Portugal’s opening match and final game, while being carefully managed physically.
The forward said the coach later proposed that he remain in Portugal rather than travel with the team for matches in Norway and Denmark.
Ronaldo said he immediately rejected the proposal, insisting that remaining behind while his teammates travelled would not set the right example, especially given his role as captain.
He said the coach eventually agreed with his position.
Ronaldo also disclosed that another conversation took place at his home in Lisbon on the eve of the training camp, during which, according to him, the previously agreed principles remained unchanged.
He subsequently started Portugal’s match at Alvalade before being substituted, saying he had no issue with the decision and personally handed the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes.
However, Ronaldo said the situation changed dramatically on the day of Portugal’s match in Norway.
According to him, an assistant approached him during lunch and informed him that the coach wanted to speak with him.
Ronaldo said he was then unexpectedly asked whether he was fit enough to play 30 minutes, despite previously understanding that he would only feature in the match at the Dragão.
He agreed to the request and was told to prepare to play.
However, Ronaldo said he warmed up from half-time but was ultimately not brought onto the pitch.
“The coach had broken his word to me,” Ronaldo stated.
The Portuguese star said the incident came as a complete surprise because he had been following the physical recovery and training plan that had previously been agreed with the coaching staff.
Ronaldo’s account provides his side of the events surrounding the latest controversy involving Portugal and raises questions about his relationship with the national team’s coaching staff.
