Deji Adeyanju Opposes Obi, El-Rufai Candidacy, Backs Fresh Face for 2027 Race

Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has stirred fresh political debate with his remarks on potential opposition strategies for the 2027 presidential election, urging parties to present a younger candidate capable of energizing voters.

In a statement shared publicly, Adeyanju said he would prefer that certain prominent figures, including Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and Abubakar Malami, are not put forward as opposition candidates. He, however, noted that other established politicians—such as Atiku Abubakar—remain acceptable options.

Adeyanju emphasized that for the opposition, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to stand a strong chance against incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a strategic shift is necessary.

According to him, presenting a relatively young candidate—preferably in their 40s and from Northern Nigeria—could reshape the political landscape and galvanize broader voter support across the country.

He argued that such a move would effectively turn the election into a referendum on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), increasing the opposition’s chances of unseating the current administration.

As alternative options, Adeyanju mentioned political figures like Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal, and Rotimi Amaechi, though he suggested they may not be strong enough to secure victory against the incumbent.
