A major tragedy was averted on Sunday after a fully loaded fuel tanker reportedly suffered brake failure while descending the notorious Ugwu Onyeama Hill in Enugu State, spilling fuel across a large section of the roadway.
The incident sparked fears of a possible explosion and fire outbreak, but the prompt intervention of the Enugu State Fire Service brought the situation under control before it could escalate into a major disaster.
No casualties were immediately reported as emergency responders secured the area and worked to prevent ignition of the spilled fuel.
Ugwu Onyeama Hill has long been regarded as one of the most hazardous routes for heavy-duty vehicles due to its steep descent and history of accidents. The latest incident has renewed calls for regular vehicle maintenance, especially brake system checks, as well as strict compliance with road safety regulations to prevent similar occurrences.
