Edo PDP Crisis: Before We Forget By Chief Raymond Dokpesi

National Leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Chief Raymond Dokpesi,
has accused the leadership the
PDP in Edo State of attempting to include him and the incumbent administration as part of their casualties of high-handedness in leadership, where internal democracy has been trampled upon and good concience buried in their defense for inordinate interest. Seeking to play the role of the piper that dictates how the Obaseki administration runs.

“Except checked, the glaring lack of internal democracy within the party in the state will continue to have gravely negative and destabilizing spillover effects in the forthcoming general elections and other elections in the State. The Open disdain against the Governor of our dear state, Mr Godwin Obaseki, his Deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu, and the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Osarodion Ogie, falls short of public expectations and such action has brought crack into the once united Edo PDP”, he warned.

He accused the leadership of the PDP in the state of spearheading hidden agenda and attempting to set the Party against the Governor.

“The tone and content of the malicious publication in circulation, mischievously written to indict me (Raymond Dokpesi), is a betrayal and demonstration of deep-rooted anger against my person and the incumbent administration, through unguarded utterances that could provoke unnecessary political tension and strife”, he warned.

Raymond Dokpesi, in his reaction to the allegations levelled against him by the party hierarchy in the state said “PDP would have struggled and not won the September 19th Governorship election in the state if it had not brought in Governor Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu”, noting that PDP has constantly lost Governorship election in the state since 2007 and the September 19th failure would have been more humiliating if not for Obaseki and his Deputy.

“PDP alone could not have won the election without the backing of the massive APC supporters that defected with the Governor, therefore no individual should attempt to attribute the success of the PDP to himself because PDP has been fielding candidates in the past twelve years without victory. It’s unfortunate that people want to arrogate imaginary success to themselves”, he lamented.

The PDP chieftain maintained “after 12 years in opposition in Edo State, we must make sacrifice to make the PDP return to winning election for the benefit of Edo people and the greater interest of PDP members, rather than a few individuals who have appointed themselves as lords to overshadow the greater interest.

“Both the old PDP members and the those from APC worked together for the success of the election under the umbrella of the PDP, therefore the PDP must be interested in evolving one family without the appellation of ‘joiners’ and ‘original members’ especially when the so called joiners were the original members of the PDP who defected due to perceived injustice”, he said.

Dokpesi, who is the Chairman of the PDP Edo North Elders and Leaders Forum, said ” PDP had no committed members across the state due to poor leadership. We only have members who are given money before they can work. We must seek for sacrificial members like the selfless leaders they are currently locking the membership door against in their desire to justify unrealistic expectations”.

He wondered why he was accused of PDP biometric funding, instead of his efforts being commended for bearing the financial burden of accomplishing such national assignment, with free media coverage of all party activities running into billions of naira for free. He described the state leadership as an ungrateful set of individuals, who are ignorant and uninformed about the party they are struggling to lead.

While proferring solution to the ongoing crisis, the elder statesman said “Edo’s party leadership must work towards democratic consolidation by welcoming democrats into the party, with overwhelming excitement, rather than working towards democratic reversal. We must show interest in genuine reform process that is capable of expanding the democratic space and deepening internal democracy. Political parties all over the world compete for membership, it’s strange to have a scenerio in Edo where the party rathe than seeking for members is threatening incoming members. They have by their conduct denied or obstructed the nurturing of democracy and freedom of association in the state.

“The current political structure in the state has remained fragile and they are in position to feather their nests and those of their kins, hence they have constantly kicked against any effort of widening the frontiers of our party or else what’s the big deal in welcoming back and integrating former members of the party with open arms? Their actions have exposed their hidden agenda and the extent of fractures in the leadership. This was the same attitude that made the party to remain in the same opposition since 2007”, he said.

The Media Guru called on the national leadership of the PDP to intervene urgently and save Edo PDP, which he said has already been enveloped in darkness, by supporting the harmonisation exercise of the governor through biometric registration as well as the immidiate dissolution of the party structure in the state, in order to pave way for the required unity and progress, which the Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration seeks in bringing value to the people of Edo State.
