The Enugu State Government has distanced itself from the reported suspension of a health assistant trainee, Miss Stella Makuochukwu Eze, clarifying that it played no role in the disciplinary action taken against her.
In a press statement issued on April 4, 2026, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, said the government was concerned about a trending report linking it to the incident involving the trainee of Ezzy Healthcare College.
According to the statement, Miss Eze is neither a student of any state-owned health institution nor an employee of the Enugu State Civil Service. The government explained that her suspension was an internal administrative matter handled by a private institution over an alleged breach of its code of conduct.
“The Government of Enugu State is not involved in the internal affairs or disciplinary processes of the private college and is only conveying information as made available to it,” the statement read.
However, the government disclosed that it had engaged with the college and other relevant stakeholders following concerns generated by a viral video involving the trainee and a colleague.
Reiterating its commitment to improving healthcare delivery, the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah highlighted ongoing reforms in the sector. It noted that the state has begun the rollout of 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres across its political wards to enhance access to quality care.
The government also revealed that over 2,250 primary healthcare workers have been recruited to strengthen service delivery, while the rehabilitation of general hospitals, including Uwani General Hospital where the incident reportedly occurred, is ongoing.
In addition, it pointed to recent progress in medical education, including the reaccreditation of the ESUT College of Medicine and an increased admission quota of 350 students for Medicine and Surgery.
Other major projects cited include the near completion of the 300-bed Enugu International Hospital and extensive infrastructure upgrades at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Parklane, such as new clinical complexes, a nursing facility with MRI diagnostic suite, and a modern accident and emergency department.
The statement further noted that the remodelling and expansion of the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) Teaching Hospital in Igbo-Eno has been completed, with recruitment of medical personnel underway.
The government urged residents to make use of healthcare facilities within their communities and reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, improved service delivery, and continuous engagement with stakeholders in the health sector.
