The Enugu State Government has warned residents to take necessary precautions against possible flooding as the rainy season intensifies across the state.
The government, in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Uchenna Agbo, said the warning became necessary following alerts from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) indicating an increased risk of flooding between September 19 and 25, 2026.
The state government urged residents to avoid dumping refuse into gutters, drainage channels, streams and rivers, warning that blocked waterways could obstruct the free flow of water and worsen flooding.
It also called on households, landlords, business owners and community leaders to keep their surroundings clean and ensure that drainage channels and waterways remain free from refuse and other obstructions.
Residents living in flood-prone areas were advised to pay close attention to weather advisories and be prepared to relocate to safer locations whenever necessary.
The government further cautioned residents against walking, swimming or driving through floodwaters, noting that the depth and strength of floodwater may be difficult to determine and could pose serious risks to lives and property.
According to the government, preventing flooding is a collective responsibility, stressing that maintaining clean surroundings and unobstructed drainage systems would help reduce the risk of flooding across the state.
The Enugu State Government appealed to residents to cooperate with authorities in keeping communities safe throughout the rainy season.
