Enugu Rep Dumps Labour Party, Joins APC to Support Tinubu’s Agenda

Chimaobi Sam Atu

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu, representing Enugu South/Enugu North Federal Constituency, has defected from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a letter read on the floor of the House by Speaker Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Hon. Atu announced his resignation from the Labour Party, citing persistent internal crises within the party at both national and state levels, which he said have undermined its capacity to deliver focused leadership.

Hon. ATU expressed appreciation to the Labour Party for the platform it had offered him but noted his decision was driven by the need to align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He commended the administration’s commitment to the South East, especially through initiatives like the proposed South East Development Commission, which he said resonates with the hopes of his constituents.

Raising a point of order, the minority whip Hon Isa Jessy cited Section 68(1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which provides for the vacation of a lawmaker’s seat upon defection from the party on whose platform they were elected.
