The Anambra State Police Command has stepped up security operations around the First Niger Bridge and alternative routes following the temporary closure of the bridge to vehicular traffic for scheduled maintenance.
The Command said the move is aimed at preventing the bridge closure from triggering serious traffic disruptions, security breaches and criminal activities along diversionary routes.
Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, on Monday, September 7, 2026, led heads of sister security agencies and other strategic commanders on an assessment of the affected areas, including the bridge, adjoining communities and identified alternative routes.
Following the assessment, the police announced the deployment of a Police-led Joint Security Team to strategic locations around the bridge, diversion routes and other critical points.
According to the Command, personnel have been directed to ensure the orderly movement of motorists, commuters and pedestrians while preventing obstruction, congestion, harassment and opportunistic criminal activities.
The CP also directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders in affected areas to sustain intensified patrols and heightened operational alertness throughout the maintenance period.
The Command said the joint deployment would also strengthen coordination among security and traffic management agencies as motorists adjust to the temporary closure.
The police urged motorists and other road users to remain calm, obey traffic and diversionary directives, and cooperate with security personnel deployed to manage movement.
Residents were also advised to promptly report suspicious persons, activities or emerging security concerns to the nearest security formation.
The Anambra Police Command assured residents, commuters and businesses that it would continue to monitor developments along the affected routes and respond promptly to traffic or security challenges.
The Command said its priority remains the protection of critical infrastructure, public safety and the free movement of people and vehicles throughout the period of the First Niger Bridge maintenance works.
