The Anambra State Police Command has rescued nine people, including seven school children and two adults, after they were caught in a flood along the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, September 22, 2026, as the victims were travelling along the affected route.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command’s Safe School Operatives responded swiftly after receiving information about the incident and mobilised to the area.
Working alongside concerned members of the community, the operatives successfully rescued the seven children and two adults and moved them to safety.
However, one other child involved in the incident remains unaccounted for.
The Police Command said it has activated sustained search and rescue operations in collaboration with community members and other relevant stakeholders to locate the missing child.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, PSC, MNIPS, directed that the search operation be sustained and expanded.
He also appealed to residents, particularly those living or operating around the affected route, to provide the Police and other responding agencies with any information that could assist in locating the missing child.
The Command urged parents, guardians, school authorities and motorists to exercise extreme caution around flooded roads, bridges and waterways, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
Parents and guardians were also advised to prevent children from attempting to cross flooded or otherwise dangerous routes.
The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting school children and strengthening collaboration with communities and relevant agencies under the Safe School Initiative to prevent avoidable loss of lives during emergencies.
