The media aide to President Muhammad Buhari, Mallam Garba Shehu, has revealed the reason why his boss was absent at the burial of the Late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru, and ten other military officers who died in the plane crash in Kaduna on Friday.
The late heroes were buried at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja on Saturday in the absence of the President and his Vice. Many Nigerians had earlier blasted the Presidency for shunning the burial ceremony of the heroes who died while on official duty.
In an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday evening, Garba Shehu said he was in Europe on official duty when the incident occurred and he has not spoken with Buhari since then. He added that the reason why the president was absent from the important ceremony is because he didn’t want to block Abuja road for citizens. He said Buhari is very concerned about the well-being of average Nigerians. He doesn’t like situations whereby roads are being blocked because he’s going out. This is the reason why he stopped going to the National Mosque for Jumat prayer.
When asked when and where the new Chief of Army Staff would be appointed, Garba Shehu responded, “The president has the power to appoint anyone from anywhere, and he will do so soon.”
