Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has made controversial claims about the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the handling of seized cannabis in Nigeria.
Speaking in a video making the rounds online, Sowore questioned the authenticity of some cannabis destruction exercises conducted by the agency, alleging that what officials publicly burn may sometimes be bamboo rather than cannabis.
“NDLEA are not burning cannabis, they are burning bamboo poles,” Sowore said, while questioning why officials would not wear nose masks during such operations.
He also made an unverified allegation that NDLEA officials are involved in the sale of cannabis, claiming that people looking for “the best cannabis” in Nigeria should visit NDLEA offices.
“If you want to get the best cannabis in this country, go to NDLEA office, they are the ones selling it,” he alleged.
Sowore further described cannabis as a “massive, lucrative crop,” arguing that it is relatively easy to cultivate once established.
He also spoke about cannabis farms and their relationship with surrounding vegetation and animals, making a number of claims about the crop’s cultivation and ecological characteristics.
