Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on Monday received 2024 Nobel Laureate in Economics, James A. Robinson, alongside a delegation of distinguished professors from the United States led by former Minister of Education and Health, Ihechukwu Madubuike, during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Umuahia.
Welcoming the delegation, Governor Otti congratulated Prof. Robinson on his Nobel Prize, describing the award as well deserved and expressing delight at finally meeting the renowned development economist.
The governor emphasized that development economics remains the most critical branch of economics because it focuses on improving people’s lives rather than merely increasing economic output.
He argued that economic growth should not be mistaken for development, explaining that GDP growth alone is insufficient if it fails to improve citizens’ welfare or keep pace with population growth.
Otti said his administration prioritizes policies that promote sustainable development by addressing the root causes of poverty, including unemployment, low productivity, and inadequate investment in human capacity.
According to him, breaking the cycle of poverty requires targeted interventions that go beyond economic statistics, adding that creating an enabling business environment must be complemented by equipping citizens with the skills and resources needed to seize available opportunities.
The governor also expressed his administration’s readiness to collaborate with Prof. Robinson on research, policy development, and knowledge exchange aimed at strengthening Abia State’s development agenda.
Speaking during the visit, Prof. Robinson said he was pleased to be in Abia and looked forward to discussions on Nigeria’s development challenges, institutional reforms, and Governor Otti’s governance approach.
Also addressing the gathering, Leander Heldring commended the developmental strides recorded in Abia, noting that the prosperity of nations largely depends on the quality of their institutions and leadership.
Similarly, Chima Korie praised the reforms in Abia, saying the state has become a model that other Nigerian states should emulate.
Leading the delegation, Prof. Madubuike said the visit was intended to deepen collaboration through research, policy advisory support, capacity building, and stronger engagement with the global academic community.
He described Abia under Governor Otti as a reference point for prudent economic management, citing the administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline, transparency, productivity, and value for money.
President of the Abia State Leadership Academy, Kenneth Kalu, also highlighted the academy’s mission of nurturing ethical and institution-focused leaders, noting that Prof. Robinson’s scholarship has significantly influenced its vision.
The meeting was attended by members of the Abia State Executive Council, including Chief of Staff Pastor Caleb Ajagba.
