Governor Alex Otti has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, career development, and economic inclusion during the 2026 International Workers’ Day celebration held at Umuahia Township Stadium.
In an address titled “Of Duty and Dignity,” Otti described labour as the foundation of civilisation and human dignity, emphasizing that workers remain central to economic growth and societal progress. He commended Abia workers for their resilience, productivity, and role in advancing what he called the “New Abia” vision.
A major highlight of the governor’s speech was the announcement that over ₦10 billion has been earmarked in the 2026 budget for the phased payment of gratuities owed to retirees over the past 20 years. He revealed that modalities for disbursement have been finalized, with payments expected to begin in the coming weeks.
Otti noted that his administration had already cleared billions of naira in salary arrears inherited from previous governments, stressing that prompt payment of workers is critical to economic stability and morale.
The governor reiterated his government’s commitment to fair wages, improved working conditions, and continuous professional development. According to him, investments have been made in training programs, office infrastructure, and technology to enhance productivity and create a conducive work environment.
He also emphasized a shift toward meritocracy in public service, stating that competence and professionalism now take precedence over political patronage in appointments and promotions.
Otti highlighted that his administration recognizes all categories of workers, including those in the informal sector, artisans, and entrepreneurs. He said ongoing investments in infrastructure and improved security have boosted business confidence and positioned Abia as an attractive destination for investors.
The governor added that increased economic activities across sectors, especially construction, are generating jobs and supporting small businesses across the state.
While acknowledging that challenges remain, Otti assured workers that his administration would continue to engage labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, in constructive dialogue.
He urged workers to remain focused and avoid being used for political agendas, stressing that government and labour share a common goal of advancing the state’s development.
Governor Otti concluded by reaffirming his administration’s dedication to building trust, ensuring fairness, and sustaining reforms that prioritize workers’ welfare and economic growth.
The 2026 May Day celebration brought together workers from across sectors, union leaders, and government officials in a show of solidarity and renewed commitment to labour rights and development in Abia State.
