Gwiyi Solomon: Telling the Enugu Story at the recently concluded PDP’s National Convention

By: Gwiyi Solomon

Since returning from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, last weekend, where I had sojourned in solidarity with the national delegates of the PDP, Enugu State Chapter who were in the seat of power to join their colleagues across the federation in electing the new National working committee of the opposition party, preparatory to 2023 general elections, my mind has continued to glow and wander in reminiscence of the colorful outing, which paraded an array of the crème de la crème of Nigeria’s rescue team come 2023.

Before I proceed in telling the Enugu story at the convention as the piece is represents, it is instructive to note that this savoir-fair wouldn’t have been possible without the provision of my estacode by Hon. Chukwudi Celestine Nnadozie, the executive chairman of Uzo-Uwani local government area and subsequent augmenting of this benevolence by the former Deputy speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly and SPA to His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Barr. Jonathan Chukwuma, who provided my other necessary logistics before and after the convention. But this is not a story for today.

Back to my tale. At the convention, all other things being equal (ceteris paribus), there was no sharp distinction between the leader and the led as most polical heads who attended the national event came without their litany of security details or coterie of personal aides. Simply put: the Principals were their own aides and functioned as same in the two-day Program which held between 30th of October, 2021 and 31st.

While the program lasted, His Excellency and Executive Governor of my dear state (Enugu), Rt. Hon. Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Ugwuanyi, who in his characteristic self, lives among his people, sat in the midst of Enugu delegates as he smooched and canoodled with every Tom, Dick and Harry, who came calling, with little or no resistance by his details. People oriented leadership.

The dinner, as well as breakfast session and the convention generally, nonetheless, provided an invaluable opportunity for us to hobnob with the top echelon of our leadership in the state, ranging from former governor, His Excellency, Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani, whose arrival at the Enugu camping ground, revived the fond memories of his stewardship in the state (between 1999 and 2007), with our delegates chanting “Ebeano, Chimaroke” for appreciable minutes.

Others who were on parade by Enugu State during the buzzing convention included Distinguished Sen. Ike Ekweremadu of Enugu West, Senator Chuka Utazi of Enugu North, members of federal House of Representatives, state assembly members, Council chairmen across the 17 LGA’s, Party stalwarts led by the State PDP chairman, Hon. Augustine Nnamani; former information Minister, Frank Nweke Jnr, Among others.

The convention was no doubt, kept afloat and aglow by the visiting national players of the party who paid homage to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of our dear state, who sat in the midst of his people for hours without interruption.

Key players at the event included former Vice president of the country, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; former Governor of Kano State, Kwankwaso; former president of the Nigerian Senate, Sen. Buikola Saraki; 13 governors of the PDP, among others.
