“I Put It to You”: Oseni Rufai Defends Interview Style, Cites Media History

Oseni Rufai

In a passionate statement addressing critics and fans alike, broadcast journalist Oseni Rufai has responded to the growing attention surrounding his signature interview style—particularly the phrase “I put it to you,” which has sparked both praise and criticism across social media.

“I am a child of media history,” Rufai said. “I have studied all media formats—even those that predate Marconi’s transmission of radio waves.”

The phrase “I put it to you” became widely recognized through the piercing interview style of Brian Walden, a former British journalist and politician known for his rigorous interviews, including those with then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Rufai urged viewers to revisit those historical moments: “Watch Brian Walden’s interviews with Lady Thatcher and you will understand what we are trying to do here.”

Rufai, co-host of The Morning Show, pointed out that criticism often comes from misunderstanding, but paradoxically, it has drawn more attention—and viewers—to the program. “For those that even criticize what they don’t understand—they have become bigger fans,” he remarked. “And thanks for putting our show on the map.”

He ended his remarks with a challenge, reminiscent of his signature style: “I put it to you—you will watch The Morning Show on Monday, and you will comment about it. People talk about what they like. We appreciate the love.”
