I Won’t Promise 24-Hour Electricity Overnight — Power Minister Joseph Tegbe Tells Nigerians

Joseph Tegbe

Joseph Tegbe, minister of power, has stated that he will not make unrealistic promises about uninterrupted electricity supply, but assured Nigerians that noticeable progress will be achieved in the sector within a short period.

Tegbe made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing a senate committee during his ministerial screening.

He described the power sector as critical to national productivity and public confidence, adding that reforming the industry remains one of Nigeria’s biggest challenges.

According to the minister, despite years of investments and reforms, many Nigerians still struggle with unstable electricity, estimated billing, and uncertainty in supply.

“I will not stand here and say tomorrow, I will give you 24 hours electricity. But what I will tell you, and I will be very honest about it, is that I will ensure that visible improvement is seen across the country in the shortest time possible,” Tegbe said.

“I will replace uncertainty for Nigerians with clarity, and inefficiency with discipline.”

The minister further revealed that Nigeria currently faces a 44 percent metering gap. While acknowledging government efforts that led to the distribution of millions of meters within the past year, he stressed that more work still needs to be done.

Tegbe explained that his administration will prioritise distribution, gas supply and generation stability, improved transmission, accountability, and transparency across the electricity sector.

“We must reduce system disturbances and strengthen transmission, tariffs must reflect services, and tariffs must justify service, and we must close the trust gap between operators and our citizens,” he added.
