The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has renewed its push for stronger institutional reforms across Nigeria’s public sector, emphasizing that transparent governance systems are the most effective safeguard against corruption.
Speaking on the need for improved accountability in government institutions, Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, Prof. Tunji Olaopa, commended the ICPC for focusing on system reviews and integrity plans rather than relying solely on punitive measures.
According to Olaopa, building transparent governance structures remains the strongest defence against corruption, urging public institutions to adopt reforms that promote accountability and efficiency.
He called on government agencies to embrace technology-driven governance, ensure transparent recruitment processes, enforce conflict-of-interest declarations, strengthen internal audit mechanisms, and demonstrate ethical leadership.
Olaopa also challenged public institutions to move beyond mere compliance with anti-corruption regulations by institutionalising continuous reforms that encourage prudent management of public resources.
The renewed call comes amid growing concerns over financial leakages, inefficiency, and weak accountability in critical sectors such as healthcare and education, with stakeholders advocating comprehensive public sector reforms to improve service delivery nationwide.
