A Kano-based fashion designer, Abdulkadir Hassanul Basari, has completed a 120-hour sewing marathon in a bid to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest sewing marathon by an individual.
Basari completed the five-day challenge, tagged Sew for the Nation, at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria in Kano, with the exercise running from October 7 to October 12, 2026.
Beyond the record attempt, the initiative also had a humanitarian objective, as the tailor used the marathon to produce school uniforms for disadvantaged pupils attending public schools.
Basari sought to surpass the existing record of 106 hours, 55 minutes and 20 seconds, established by fellow Nigerian tailor Oluwaseun Kuforiji in 2025.
His completion of the 120-hour challenge could put him ahead of the current record holder, although official recognition will depend on verification by Guinness World Records.
The organisation is expected to review the evidence submitted for the attempt before determining whether Basari has established a new record.
The initiative combines a test of endurance and professional skill with efforts to support education by providing uniforms for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
