Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed widespread reports suggesting an imminent political realignment, insisting that neither he nor his associates have taken a final decision on their next move.
In a statement addressing recent speculation surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kwankwaso said narratives of a planned defection were “misleading” and premature.
He explained that the party is currently facing legal uncertainties following a Supreme Court judgment that affirmed the legitimacy of the David Mark-led National Working Committee, while also returning aspects of the dispute to the High Court. According to him, this has left the ADC in a “precarious position.”
Kwankwaso further pointed to a recent Federal High Court ruling that questioned the legitimacy of the party’s convention, as well as a move by the Attorney General of the Federation to seek the party’s deregistration, deepening concerns about its stability.
The former defence minister noted that his earlier exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) was driven by legal challenges, adding that similar issues now confronting the ADC have prompted fresh consultations.
He disclosed that discussions are ongoing with key stakeholders and leaders across political platforms, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), to determine the most viable path forward.
On the question of presidential ambition, Kwankwaso said he has neither declared interest nor endorsed any candidate, stressing that the ADC has yet to zone its ticket or make any official decision regarding the 2027 elections.
Reflecting on his political history, he highlighted his role in past elections, noting that he supported Muhammadu Buhari after finishing second in the 2014 APC presidential primary, and later backed Atiku Abubakar in 2019 after contesting the PDP ticket.
Kwankwaso also clarified that his absence from recent ADC stakeholders’ meetings was due to personal commitments, which he said were duly communicated to the party leadership.
He assured supporters that consultations remain ongoing and that any final decision regarding his political future would be formally announced through appropriate channels.
