A lawyer has approached the Federal High Court seeking the enforcement of the fundamental rights of the presidential candidate of the NDC, Peter Obi, including an order directing the Federal Government to provide him with adequate security.
Addressing journalists after filing the suit, the lawyer claimed that Obi had raised concerns that his life was under threat and argued that he should be allowed to campaign freely across Nigeria without intimidation or restrictions.
The lawyer warned against what he described as a repeat of past political violence, referencing the late Lagos politician, Funsho Williams. He alleged that Obi’s safety must be guaranteed as political activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election gather momentum.
He also criticized comments allegedly made by the Edo State Governor warning Obi against campaigning in the state, insisting that every Nigerian has a constitutional right to move freely and canvass support anywhere in the country without fear or hindrance.
The lawyer further alleged that Nigeria’s annual budget had become an “instrument of fraud,” accusing the current administration of financial mismanagement and corruption. He maintained that Obi’s anti-corruption stance and campaign message had made him a target of political hostility.
The matter is expected to be determined by the Federal High Court.
