Chelsea have joined Arsenal in the race to sign highly-rated Roma winger Cengiz Under next month. According to Football London, Maurizio Sarri will do battle with Unai Emery to secure the 21-year-old’s signature. The Gunners have been linked with a move for the Turkish international in recent weeks.
Italian outlet Tuttomercato suggests the north Londoners have already had a £29m bid turned down by Roma officials. However, the Spaniard could see a dent in his chances of landing Under with Chelsea now weighing up a bid. The Blues have a number of wide men in their ranks, with Eden Hazard, Pedro, Willian, Victor Moses and Callum Hudson-Odoi all on Sarri’s books.
However, the Chelsea boss may make a surprise swoop for the Roma star as he continues to put his stamp on the Blues squad. Reports in Italy claim Roma have slapped a £45m price tag on their player. Under is one of the club’s lowest earners. The Turkish International arrived in the Italian capital 18 months ago for £12m.
And a season-and-a-half later, Roma bosses could cash in for what would be a remarkable profit. Tuttomercato report that Under is unlikely to be allowed to leave as soon as January. Instead, a move next summer is a more viable option, with Roma allowed time to line-up a replacement of their own. Under prefers a switch to the Premier League, keeping speculation of a move away from Roma rife.
