A mining pit collapse has claimed the lives of six people and left another person injured in Babban-Rafi, near Bokkos town in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, according to Kefas Mallai, Chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos.
Mallai told The Peoples Gazette that the victims’ bodies were evacuated from the collapsed mining site shortly after the incident.
He disclosed that one woman survived the collapse but sustained a broken leg after falling into the pit.
According to him, the woman was carrying her granddaughter on her back when the mining site suddenly caved in.
Despite the collapse, the baby reportedly escaped unhurt.
Mallai said he was on his way to meet the survivor following the incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Plateau State, Alfred Alabo, could not immediately be reached for comment.
The latest incident adds to concerns over the dangers associated with mining activities in Plateau State. In December 2019, six people were also killed after a mining pit collapsed in Zawan Community, Jos South Local Government Area of the state.
