Fenerbahce has confirmed that Jose Mourinho is suing Galatasaray for £42,000 over “moral damages” after being accused of making racist statements.

Following a goalless draw on Monday, Mourinho was banned for four matches and fined £32,655 for comments about the Galatasaray bench “jumping like monkeys” and his preference for a foreign referee. Fenerbahce has appealed the ban.

Mourinho, 62, is seeking 1,907,000 Turkish Lira (£41,500) in damages. Fenerbahce insists his remarks were taken out of context, while former players, including Didier Drogba, have defended him. The Turkish Football Federation cited Mourinho’s conduct as offensive and detrimental to Turkish football.

If the appeal fails, Mourinho will miss Fenerbahce’s next three domestic games.
