Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said he does not concern himself with how much his wife spends on luxury items because she has her own business and earns her own money.
Obi made the remark while explaining his approach to personal finances and public funds, stressing that his wife’s spending is separate from his responsibilities in managing public resources.
My wife has her own business and her own money, so what is my business if she buys expensive items with her money? The bags and shoes my wife wears, I don’t even know how much they cost,” Obi said.
He added that his wife was actually “less sophisticated” than she used to be before he became governor, noting that his position in public office influenced how cautious he became about spending.
She used to be far more sophisticated before I became governor. I’m managing public money, and as long as she lives her own life without interfering with my management of public funds, good luck to her.”
Obi also recalled that he did not establish an Office of the First Lady during his tenure as Anambra governor.
According to him, he personally does not celebrate his birthday but does not prevent others from celebrating him, provided he is not expected to foot the bills.
I don’t celebrate my own birthday, but I don’t stop people from celebrating. As long as you don’t ask me to pay the birthday bills, I will even attend if you invite me.
