The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has disclosed that its preparations for the 2027 general elections are being financed through donations, levies and contributions from members, stakeholders and supporters.
The party made this known on Tuesday in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, amid questions surrounding its sources of funding and candidate selection process.
Director explained that the NDC, as a relatively new political organisation without elected public office holders, had to establish mechanisms to raise funds for its operations and nationwide mobilisation ahead of the elections.
According to him, the party’s constitution permits financial contributions from aspirants, members, stakeholders and members of the public to support its activities.
He said the funds are paid directly into designated party accounts and managed by the appropriate organs in accordance with the party’s procedures.
The NDC spokesman also dismissed allegations that the party’s National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, demanded or collected money from aspirants for personal use.
“All funds were duly received, receipted and accounted for in line with global best practices,” he said.
Director further disclosed that the party would render a comprehensive account of its finances in accordance with the Electoral Act and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He said election financing was unavoidable for any political organisation seeking to mobilise supporters and field candidates across the country, particularly an opposition party preparing for a nationwide contest within a limited timeframe.
Presidential Ticket Offered Free
The NDC publicity secretary also revealed that the party’s presidential and vice-presidential tickets were offered without charge.
He said the same principle applied to several other political positions and candidates within the party.
According to him, the decision was part of the party’s effort to promote broad participation and strengthen its political mobilisation ahead of 2027.
Director reiterated the commitment of the NDC leadership to transparency, due process and fairness, while urging Nigerians and the media to rely on verified information when reporting the party’s activities.
He said the party would continue its preparations for the 2027 elections with the aim of building a broad-based political movement across Nigeria.
