Despite months of strained diplomatic relations and fiery rhetoric, the Republic of Niger has turned to Nigeria for urgent assistance following a crippling fuel shortage in the landlocked West African nation.
According to findings by Akelicious, a high-powered delegation of senior officials from Niger’s military junta quietly visited Abuja in recent days to hold talks with representatives of the Nigerian Federal Government.
Sources familiar with the meeting confirmed that after intense deliberations, Nigeria agreed to assist by approving the delivery of 300 trucks of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, to ease the worsening fuel crisis in Niger.
The development marks a significant shift in the frosty ties between both nations, which had been strained following the July 2023 military coup in Niger and Nigeria’s subsequent alignment with ECOWAS sanctions.
It remains to be seen whether this gesture will lead to a broader thaw in relations, but for now, fuel is flowing—and diplomacy, it seems, is back in motion.
