The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has declared Nigeria the worst place to be born, blaming the APC led administration for the country’s worsening socio-economic challenges.
Obi made the remark in his Independence Day message on Thursday, October 1, as Nigeria celebrated its 66th Independence Anniversary.
He lamented that despite the promises made by the ruling party during the 2023 elections, poverty, insecurity, unemployment and hunger had continued to worsen.
“Despite the promises made by the APC government in 2023, our nation continues to face deepening challenges across virtually every critical sector of national life,” he stated.
Citing figures on poverty and education, the former Anambra State governor claimed that more than 140 million Nigerians were experiencing poverty and hardship, while over 80 million children were out of school.
He also expressed concern over the growing cases of banditry and kidnapping, alongside the recent death of 37 young people.
Obi further highlighted the country’s hunger crisis, warning that about 40 million Nigerians could face extreme food shortages before the end of the year.
He also raised concerns about Nigeria’s high infant and maternal mortality rates, describing the country’s youth unemployment figures and drug prevalence as alarming.
“Today, Nigeria is the worst place to be born. Our youth unemployment is the highest; over 35 million youths are unemployed, and we have one of the worst drug prevalences globally,” he added.
