Nigerian Army Denies Link With Man Described as Retired General

The Nigerian Army has dissociated itself from one Haruna Garba Gololo, also known as Garus Gololo, describing claims that he is a retired general of the Nigerian Army as false and misleading.

The army, in a disclaimer issued on Tuesday, said the individual was neither a serving nor retired personnel of the Nigerian Army and had never served in the institution in any capacity.

The disclaimer followed a publication by Sahara Reporters titled: “Retired Nigerian Army General Arrested in Abuja After Criticising Senate President Akpabio Over 2027 Comments.”

According to the Army, portraying Gololo as a retired general was capable of creating wrong impressions in the minds of the public.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to categorically state that the said individual is neither a serving nor retired personnel of the Nigerian Army and has never at any time served in the Nigerian Army in any capacity whatsoever,” the statement said.

It added that the attribution was false, misleading and capable of undermining public trust and institutional integrity.

The army therefore urged members of the public to disregard the claim and advised media organisations to exercise due diligence in matters relating to the Armed Forces of Nigeria and national institutions.

It also called on relevant media platforms to correct the misrepresentation in line with the principles of accuracy, fairness and responsible journalism.

“The public is therefore urged to disregard the misleading attribution and be properly guided,” the statement added.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency and the defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity in line with its constitutional responsibilities.
