The Nigerian Law School has confirmed the death of a 23-year-old student, Faith Alayande, following a fall from the rooftop of a hostel at its Lagos Campus.
Alayande, who was originally a student of the Nigerian Law School’s Enugu Campus, was temporarily accommodated at the Lagos Campus while undertaking her externship programme in the state.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke O. Osho, the institution said the incident occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026.
“Preliminary information indicates that, at about 4:00 am on Friday, 7 August 2026, the student fell from the rooftop of the hostel at the Campus and, sadly, succumbed to the incident,” the statement said.
The Law School said it was working with relevant authorities and Alayande’s family to establish the circumstances surrounding her death and ensure that all necessary procedures were followed.
The Lagos State Police Command had earlier confirmed the incident, stating that the hostel matron reported that Alayande had been found unresponsive within the premises.
According to the police, officers visited the scene and evacuated her remains to a morgue, while an investigation was commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Earlier reports had claimed that a hostel mate and a relative of the deceased allegedly found a note believed to have been written by Alayande before a search for her began. She was later found unresponsive following the reported fall.
However, the Nigerian Law School did not provide further details on the circumstances that preceded the incident.
Reacting to the tragedy, the institution expressed condolences to Alayande’s family, colleagues and others affected by her death.
“The Management extends its deepest condolences and sympathy to the family, colleagues and all those affected by this distressing incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time,” the statement said.
The Law School also appealed to members of the public and the media to respect the family’s privacy and refrain from actions or commentary that could deepen their grief.
The institution reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and wellbeing of its students and staff as investigations into the incident continue.
