A Nigerian widow has shared her experience of struggling to access the ₦395,000 reportedly left in her late husband’s bank account more than a year after his death.
According to the woman, her husband died in January 2025, and she later discovered that he had money in his bank account. However, she said she has been unable to access the funds because of the procedures required to claim money belonging to a deceased account holder.
Speaking about her experience, the widow urged couples to ensure that their spouses are aware of important banking details, including ATM and mobile banking information, saying such arrangements could help families avoid difficulties during emergencies.
She explained that she had spent significant amounts of money on transportation while repeatedly travelling to resolve the issue, despite making little or no progress.
The widow said the situation had become particularly stressful because the amount involved, although relatively small, could have provided important support to a family struggling financially.
She therefore advised married couples to have open discussions about their financial arrangements and ensure that trusted family members are aware of relevant information that may be needed in an emergency.
She said her experience was intended as a warning to others to make proper financial arrangements while they are alive, so their families would not face unnecessary hardship when they are no longer around.
