President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has triggered fresh reactions on social media after referring to himself as “Governor Bola Tinubu” while speaking at the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja.
The event, held on Wednesday at the State House Conference Centre, saw the President address party leaders and members of the campaign council as preparations for the 2027 general elections gathered momentum.
During his remarks, Tinubu appeared to mistakenly describe himself as a governor while discussing his bid for another four-year term in office.
“Distinguished leaders of our party, all the party members, presidential campaign council, I’ve seen my friend here that I must thank. And next will be the recognition of the director-general of the presidential campaign council that will bring Governor Bola Tinubu back for a second time,” the President said.
The remark quickly attracted attention online, with several social media users questioning the apparent slip and drawing comparisons with his time as governor of Lagos State.
Akelicious gathered some of the reactions, which ranged from criticism of the President’s public speaking to broader concerns about the country’s economic situation and the prospect of another term for the current administration.
One user, @ade_397, expressed pessimism about the country’s direction, writing, “Na only God fit deliver us as it is now cos human tends not to learn…. despite scarcity. No circulation of money. Another 4 year again of hardship.”
Another user, @Goldman45274355, suggested that similar concerns had been raised during the 2023 election campaign, adding that Tinubu had since appeared healthy and active.
Meanwhile, @urbanspi linked the President’s remark to his political past, writing, “He can only remember himself when he was governor, every other thing that has happened he can’t remember.”
Some commenters also criticised what they described as errors in the President’s speech. @lewis_iyaogeh contrasted Tinubu’s remarks with a lengthy online appearance by Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, while making a political argument against another Tinubu term.
Other users expressed frustration with those supporting the President’s re-election bid, while some questioned why party members applauded after the remark.
“He doesn’t even know that he is the president. No wonder smh,” @dizneyx wrote.
Similarly, @Josephalexchekw commented, “And they’re all clapping.”
Another user, @Mark_Lander9993, referred to Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos governor and criticised the way he delivered the statement.
The reactions also included allegations about the President’s health and mental state. However, the comments were opinions expressed by social media users and do not constitute medical evidence or an independent assessment of his health.
Tinubu served as governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 before becoming President of Nigeria in May 2023.
