The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has accused political leaders of worsening the hardship faced by workers and poor Nigerians, warning that citizens will remember their suffering when the 2027 elections come.
In its Sallah message signed by NLC President, Joe Ajaero, the labour union said millions of Nigerians are struggling under economic policies it described as anti-people.
The NLC said workers and vulnerable citizens have continued to bear the burden of rising food prices, high transport costs, insecurity and falling purchasing power.
It criticised the impact of petrol subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms, saying the policies have deepened poverty and placed ordinary Nigerians under heavy pressure.
The union also raised concern over worsening insecurity, including kidnapping, banditry, communal violence, herdsmen attacks and urban crime, saying Nigerians should not be forced to celebrate religious festivals under fear, hunger and uncertainty.
According to the NLC, political leaders cannot keep demanding sacrifice from citizens while failing to show restraint in public spending and leadership conduct.
The labour body warned that the next election cycle must become an opportunity for workers, unemployed youths, traders, artisans and other struggling Nigerians to challenge policies that have worsened their lives.
It urged citizens to use the Eid period for prayers, reflection, political education and grassroots mobilisation, stressing that governance must protect the weak, secure communities and provide opportunities for Nigerians to live with dignity.
