The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State branch, has suspended its ongoing industrial action following developments surrounding the alleged assault and molestation of medical personnel by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
The decision was reached during an Emergency General Meeting (EGM) held virtually on Monday night, where members reviewed the incident involving Prof. Ekpe, doctors, and other healthcare workers, as well as the interventions made by authorities and stakeholders.
According to a communiqué issued after the meeting, the association praised the unity and resilience shown by members during the industrial action and acknowledged the efforts of the State Officers’ Committee led by Aniekan Peter for defending the resolutions of Congress.
The association also commended interventions from key stakeholders, including the Coordinating Minister of Health, the Akwa Ibom State Government, health authorities, and the EFCC leadership. It noted that the efforts led to the constitution of a committee expected to be inaugurated on May 20, 2026, to address and prevent future assaults on healthcare workers.
NMA described the public apology issued by the EFCC Chairman on national television as unprecedented and a major step toward accountability. The association said the development represented a victory not only for doctors in Akwa Ibom but also for healthcare workers nationwide.
The group further acknowledged support from healthcare unions including Joint Health Sector Unions and National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives for standing in solidarity during the advocacy process.
Congress unanimously resolved to suspend the strike with immediate effect and directed members to resume duties from 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, while emphasizing that all earlier demands remain active and will continue to be pursued through engagement with relevant authorities.
Doctors were also urged to return to work promptly while maintaining professionalism and adherence to approved workplace standards.
